SIC (US 1987) : Seven Pines Forge, owned by myself, Ted Ferringer, is nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania. My blacksmithing tools were handed down through the generations and the techniques and methods that were used during the “heyday” of blacksmithing are still used by me today. The sound of an anvil that rings like a bell when hit is a pleasant reminder of the past and the historical importance of the blacksmith in the development of civilization. Perhaps it is the desire to return to our forefathers’ skill in craft making and to shun society’s dependence on impersonal mass production that inspires me to handcraft authentic reproductions. Each item I create is forged from iron, often by the same careful and tedious methods used by the blacksmith of old.
Long before the factory system, long before mass production and long before the advent of our throw away society, there was the blacksmith, working at his forge, creating tools necessary for life in historic America. It is no wonder that the blacksmith trade is known as the “grandfather of all industry. ” Each piece I make reveals the subtle individuality of the craft, for those who appreciate the simplicity of Colonial design and the tradition of Early American wrought iron. The amount of skill, labor and time required for my craft is not easy but I am committed to preserve the standard and quality of my trade.
